A Heartfelt Collaboration: Fabio Mesa and his dreamers in NY
March 16, 2024
Visual Art Sur (VAS) recently embarked on a deeply moving collaboration with Colombian artist Fabio Mesa, aiming to support the Aid for LIFE International Foundation in New York City. On Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, Fabio graciously accepted the invitation to join forces with VAS founder Nora Ellis for a remarkable initiative.
The primary objective of this project was to offer a day of art therapy to a group of 45 individuals, all of whom were immigrants facing various social disadvantages. Through the transformative power of art, the participants were encouraged to explore and express their emotions, memories, and aspirations.
The centerpiece of this endeavor was a monumental triptych, a collaborative creation involving the immigrants themselves. They were invited to channel their innermost thoughts and emotions by drawing, writing, or otherwise expressing elements of happiness from their lives back in their home countries. It was a profound exercise aimed at evoking positive memories and feelings amidst the challenges they currently face.
However, what unfolded was a testament to the resilience and strength of the human spirit. As the participants delved into their memories, many found themselves grappling with a torrent of emotions. Instead of recalling moments of happiness, they confronted the harsh reality of loss – loss of their homeland, their loved ones, their possessions – a poignant reminder of the hardships they have endured.
Despite the tears and the overwhelming emotions, the experience was cathartic. It provided a safe space for these individuals to confront their grief, to share their stories, and to find solace in the company of others who understood their struggles. Through art, they were able to articulate feelings that had long been suppressed, fostering a sense of healing and empowerment.
For Visual Art Sur and Fabio Mesa, witnessing the profound impact of this collaboration was truly humbling. The opportunity to connect with these resilient individuals, to offer them a platform for expression and healing, was a privilege. Though the journey may have been fraught with pain, it was also marked by moments of connection, of solidarity, and of hope.
As we reflect on this experience, we are filled with pride and gratitude for the time spent with these courageous individuals. Though their journey may be marked by challenges, their resilience and strength serve as a beacon of inspiration for us all. And as we continue our work with the Aid for LIFE International Foundation, we remain committed to supporting and uplifting those who need it most.
In art, in community, and in compassion, we find the power to transform lives and create a brighter future for all.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Jesus Aguáis, Founder of the Aid for LIFE International Foundation, and Lupe Aguáis, his General Coordinator, for their ongoing collaboration and for graciously allowing us to be part of their programs throughout the years.
